SEMMCO WINS £10M PRISON SERVICE CONTRACT

SEMMCO WINS £10M PRISON SERVICE CONTRACT

Semmco Life Protection Systems (LPS), UK-based expert manufacturer of short duration breathing apparatus, announces a new £10m contract with HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) to provide its HEAD RPE/CSRE (Cell Snatch Rescue Equipment) escape breathing sets to prisons across England and Wales.

The 8+2-year contract will see Semmco LPS provide a complete service to HMPPS, with 4,500 sets deployed across its prison estate, supported by comprehensive user training, the supply of user manuals, technical support and a fully managed refurb and maintenance programme.

Simple to use and totally reliable, the Semmco LPS range of escape and working rescue breathing apparatus protects those working in environments that could become hazardous and life threatening. It is lightweight, quick and easy to don and as is head mounted, meaning the wearer is not constrained with a cylinder or bag across their body. Its design using a latex neck seal and moulded oronasal mask to achieve an excellent face seal, negates the need for a fit test to be done.

The equipment is designed and manufactured in the UK at Semmco’s headquarters in Woking, Surrey and manufacturing will start in July 2023, in preparation for supply starting January 2024 when all the existing sets will be replaced.

HMPPS, an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice, is committed to providing safe and supportive environments across all its prisons, with an emphasis on rehabilitation through education and employment. The safety of its staff and those in its care is paramount and when exceptional incidents do occur, HMPPS is committed to ensuring the health and safety of everyone.

When an incident occurs, there is a requirement for Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) to enable the safe resolution of the cell fire, ensuring the protection of those involved from harmful smoke and fumes. Since 2009, HMPPS has deployed over 3,000 RPE sets across the prison estate, with an average of two sets used per cell fire event.

Carl Bennett, General Manager of Semmco LPS said: “As a UK design and manufacturing company, we are delighted to be awarded this contract by HMPPS. Our innovative rescue sets are easy to use and totally reliable, ensuring safety for the user in an emergency. We are able to provide a full life service and refurbishment programme for our customers, making the Semmco LPS Head Escape Breathing Apparatus a cost-effective and sustainable solution.”
